  • Yield: 8 servings
  • Diet: Gluten-Free

Description

This Classic German Beef Roast is a succulent centerpiece, boasting a rich, savory flavor that envelops your palate with every bite. The tender, juicy meat is complemented by a crispy, golden-brown crust, while the aromatic herbs and spices create a warm, inviting aroma that fills the kitchen.

Ingredients

  • Beef Roast: 3-4 pounds of chuck roast, trimmed
  • Seasoning: 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Vegetables: 2 large onions, quartered; 4 carrots, chopped; 3 stalks of celery, chopped
  • Liquid: 2 cups beef broth; 1 cup red wine (optional)
  • Herbs: 2 sprigs fresh rosemary; 2 sprigs fresh thyme
  • Oil: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for searing

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. Season the beef roast generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. In a large Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Sear the roast on all sides until browned, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  4. Remove the roast and set aside. In the same pot, add the onions, carrots, and celery, sautéing for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  5. Return the roast to the pot, add the beef broth and red wine, and nestle the herbs around the meat.
  6. Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven. Roast for 3-4 hours, or until the meat is fork-tender.
  7. Remove the roast from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • This roast can be made a day in advance; simply reheat gently in the oven before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For a gluten-free option, omit the red wine or use a gluten-free broth.
