Description
Classic Green Bean Casserole is a comforting dish that combines tender green beans with a rich, creamy mushroom sauce, topped with crispy fried onions. The texture is a delightful contrast between the smooth sauce and the crunchy topping, while the flavor is a harmonious blend of savory and earthy notes that evoke warmth and nostalgia.
Ingredients
- Green Beans: 1 pound, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
- Mushroom Soup: 2 cans (10.5 oz each) of cream of mushroom soup
- Milk: 1/2 cup, whole milk preferred
- Onion: 1 medium, finely chopped
- Garlic: 2 cloves, minced
- Black Pepper: 1/2 teaspoon, freshly ground
- Fried Onions: 1 1/2 cups, for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil and blanch the green beans for 5 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, and black pepper. Stir until well mixed.
- Add the blanched green beans to the soup mixture and stir until the beans are evenly coated.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the mixture is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle the fried onions evenly over the top.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.
Notes
- This casserole can be made a day in advance; simply assemble it without the fried onions, cover, and refrigerate. Add the onions before baking.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- For a lighter version, substitute the cream of mushroom soup with a homemade mushroom sauce or a low-fat alternative.
