Description

Famous Crab Bombs are a delightful fusion of crispy exterior and creamy, savory crab filling that bursts with flavor in every bite. The golden-brown crust gives way to a rich, buttery mixture of crab meat, cream cheese, and spices, creating a mouthwatering experience that is both indulgent and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Crab Filling:
    • 1 pound lump crab meat, picked over for shells
    • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
    • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
    • 1/4 cup green onions, finely chopped
    • 1/4 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • Breading:
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 2 large eggs, beaten
    • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
    • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the crab meat, cream cheese, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay seasoning, green onions, and red bell pepper. Mix gently until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 1.5-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one for flour, one for beaten eggs, and one for panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Dredge each crab ball in flour, then dip in the beaten eggs, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the crab bombs in batches for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Make-ahead: You can prepare the crab filling a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Form the balls and bread them just before frying.
  • Storage: Leftover crab bombs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Substitutions: For a lighter version, use Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise, or substitute crab with shrimp or lobster.
