Description
Delicious homemade sourdough Runzas filled with savory ground beef, cabbage, and melty cheese, wrapped in a flaky crust.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups sourdough starter
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cabbage, shredded
- 1/2 cup onions, diced
- 1 cup cheese, shredded
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, bring together the sourdough starter, flour, milk, melted butter, yeast, sugar, and salt. Stir until a dough begins to form. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes. Cover with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- While your dough rises, prepare the filling by heating a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and onions, cooking until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent. Incorporate the shredded cabbage and cook until softened, around 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Flour your work surface and roll out the risen dough until it’s about 1/4 inch thick. Cut the dough into squares, each approximately 4 inches wide.
- Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each square, followed by a sprinkle of shredded cheese. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges tightly to seal.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place your filled Runzas on it. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve your Runzas warm and enjoy!
Notes
Make the filling a day ahead and store it in the fridge. Use an air fryer at 375°F for 15 minutes for quicker results.
