- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1 cup raisins
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
- Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar until well combined.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk and melted butter (if using).
- Stir until a soft, shaggy dough forms.
- Add the raisins, folding them in carefully.
- Knead the dough briefly on a floured surface until smooth.
- Shape into a round loaf, about 1½ inches thick.
- Place on the baking sheet and cut a deep cross on top.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until it sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
You can store the bread wrapped tightly at room temperature for 2-3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
