Description

A comforting and easy-to-make bread with a tender crumb and a crunchy crust, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk and melted butter (if using).
  4. Stir until a soft, shaggy dough forms.
  5. Add the raisins, folding them in carefully.
  6. Knead the dough briefly on a floured surface until smooth.
  7. Shape into a round loaf, about 1½ inches thick.
  8. Place on the baking sheet and cut a deep cross on top.
  9. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until it sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

You can store the bread wrapped tightly at room temperature for 2-3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
