Description
A delicious and indulgent dessert featuring a flaky pie crust filled with sweet and tart apples, drizzled with rich salted caramel.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 cups thinly sliced apples (Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup salted caramel sauce
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
- Roll out half of the dough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place the crust in the pie plate.
- In another bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Pour into the crust.
- Drizzle salted caramel sauce over the apple mixture.
- Roll out the second half of the dough and place over the filling. Seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Brush the top crust with beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft and crust is golden brown.
- Let cool before serving. Drizzle with additional salted caramel if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use a mix of sweet and tart apples.
- Make sure to chill the dough for the best texture.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
