Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples (Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Roll out half of the dough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place the crust in the pie plate.
  5. In another bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Pour into the crust.
  6. Drizzle salted caramel sauce over the apple mixture.
  7. Roll out the second half of the dough and place over the filling. Seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  8. Brush the top crust with beaten egg.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft and crust is golden brown.
  10. Let cool before serving. Drizzle with additional salted caramel if desired.

  • For a richer flavor, use a mix of sweet and tart apples.
  • Make sure to chill the dough for the best texture.
