- 12 oz penne or spaghetti

- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- Fresh basil, for garnish
Instructions
- Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a rapid boil. Add pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Heat the skillet: In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat until it shimmers.
- Sauté aromatics: Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent. Then, add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Brown the sausage: Crumble the Italian sausage into the skillet and cook until browned and fully cooked through.
- Add the tomato sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Season: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Combine with pasta: Add the drained pasta to the skillet and toss to combine. If the mixture appears dry, add reserved pasta water as needed.
- Serve and garnish: Plate the pasta and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and fresh basil before serving.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute Italian sausage with turkey sausage or a plant-based option. You can also add sautéed bell peppers or spinach for added nutrition.
