Ingredients
-
2 oz tequila (silver or blanco)
Offers a smooth, clear agave-forward flavor that blends beautifully with orange juice. -
4 oz orange juice
Freshly squeezed is ideal for a brighter, more natural citrus flavor, but bottled juice also works well in a pinch. -
½ oz grenadine
A sweet, ruby-red syrup that creates the signature sunrise effect. Adds a subtle pomegranate sweetness. -
Ice
Keeps the drink cold and helps layer the grenadine.
Garnish:
-
Orange slice
For added aroma, color, and visual flair. -
Maraschino cherry
A pop of color and sweetness that enhances the tropical vibe.
Instructions
Step 1: Fill Your Glass
-
Use a highball or Collins glass.
-
Fill it about three-quarters full with ice.
Step 2: Add Tequila and Orange Juice
-
Pour 2 oz of tequila over the ice.
-
Add 4 oz of orange juice, preferably freshly squeezed, for the best flavor.
-
Stir gently to combine the two.
Step 3: Pour the Grenadine
-
Slowly pour ½ oz of grenadine down the inside of the glass.
-
Allow it to sink naturally—it will settle at the bottom and create the iconic layered sunrise effect.
-
Do not stir after adding the grenadine, or the gradient will disappear.
Step 4: Garnish
-
Garnish with a slice of orange placed on the rim of the glass.
-
Add a maraschino cherry either dropped into the drink or skewered on a cocktail pick.
Notes
The beauty of the Tequila Sunrise lies not just in its vibrant appearance, but in its simple elegance. Unlike many layered cocktails, it doesn’t require fancy bartending skills. As long as you pour the grenadine slowly and let gravity do the work, you’ll have a show-stopping drink every time.
The tequila provides just the right amount of kick, while the orange juice offers brightness and balance. Grenadine sweetens the base without overpowering it, giving the cocktail a light, tropical, and inviting character.
It’s also an excellent drink for brunch or day drinking—refreshing, citrusy, and not overly strong.
