Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Glass
Start by selecting the perfect glass. A tall hurricane glass or Tiki mug works beautifully to highlight the cocktail’s layers and color. Fill the glass with ice to chill it while you prepare your ingredients.
Step 2: Combine the Juices and Syrup
In a cocktail shaker (or mixing glass), add:
-
1 oz orange juice
-
1 oz pineapple juice
-
½ oz passion fruit syrup
-
Splash of lime juice
Shake or stir to blend the citrus and tropical flavors. These form the sweet and tangy base of your cocktail.
Step 3: Add the Rums
Pour in:
-
1 oz dark rum
-
1 oz spiced rum
These rums give the cocktail its warmth and depth. The dark rum adds richness and a hint of molasses, while the spiced rum brings a touch of vanilla, clove, and cinnamon.
Give the mixture a gentle shake just to combine. You don’t want to over-dilute with ice—just blend.
Step 4: Layer the Grenadine
Carefully pour ½ oz of grenadine directly into the glass over the back of a spoon. Because grenadine is denser than the other liquids, it will slowly sink to the bottom, creating a layered “sunset” effect. This is where the cocktail gets its twilight-inspired appearance.
Step 5: Assemble and Garnish
Pour the shaken mixture over ice in your prepared glass. Watch as the grenadine remains at the bottom, gradually blending with the orange and golden juices above. It should resemble a tropical sunset, fading from deep red to amber to light gold.
Garnish with a slice of orange, a maraschino cherry, and if you’re feeling playful, a tiny paper umbrella. Presentation matters with this drink—after all, it’s a Tiki-style cocktail meant to impress.
Notes
This cocktail is all about balance. While it’s sweet and fruit-forward, the dual rums and the acidic lime juice keep it from becoming cloying. The grenadine not only contributes color but gives a gentle pomegranate sweetness that anchors the brighter juices above.
If you’re serving this to guests, make it in batches. Simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings, mix in a large pitcher, and serve over ice. You can still add the grenadine last for that signature layered effect.
