A comforting dish of rich, smoky, and sweet baked beans, perfect for barbecues and potlucks, made effortlessly in a crockpot.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups dried navy beans
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1/2 cup bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dried beans under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them overnight in plenty of water.
  2. Drain and rinse the soaked beans before moving on to the next step.
  3. Stir together the soaked beans, diced onion, brown sugar, ketchup, molasses, salt, pepper, mustard, and crumbled bacon in your crockpot.
  4. Pour in the 5 cups of water, ensuring the beans are completely submerged.
  5. Gently stir to combine, ensuring each bean is coated.
  6. Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  7. Taste the baked beans before serving and adjust seasoning as needed.
  8. Serve warm, straight from the pot.

Notes

These baked beans can be made a day in advance and taste better after sitting. For quicker preparation, use a pressure cooker for approximately 30-40 minutes.
